A fatal train derailment in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the pace and execution of the country's flagship government projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a line constructed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the cause of this accident,” declared the head of state.
The leader reported that, of the some 250 people on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in grave condition. The leader stated plans to travel to Oaxaca to confer with those impacted.
Major Initiative of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose time in office concluded the prior year. This rail line was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental agenda for the southeastern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically less developed part of the country.
Building Management and Worries
The construction of both railway systems was managed by the army, marking a notable increase of its duties in public works. They were completed at an rapid pace, beating expectations to be partially opened before the end of that presidency.
However, this accelerated timeline had also raised ongoing concerns over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a railroad crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced several non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a primary political opposition called for an immediate suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.
This halt was requested until the completion of a full technical review. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the head of state asserted that the train had been functioning in total accordance with all operational standards. Promises were given that the government would remain "accountable" in both the development and operation of these national projects.
